World Book Day is an annual event celebrating books and reading that sees children dressing up as characters from their favourite books. Here’s everything you need to know about World Book Day 2020.
What is World Book Day?
World Book Day is an annual celebration of reading, books, authors and illustrators. Designated by UNESCO as a celebration of books and reading, it’s now celebrated in over 100 countries all over the world.
This year’s theme is ‘Share a Story’, it encourages children and parents to spend at least 10 minutes a day sharing a book together to celebrate reading for pleasure. Taking the time to explore reading at a young age helps create lifelong readers and engage children in a creative and educational way.
Is your little one a lover of the Harry Potter books, or the incredible tales of Roald Dahl? Let their imagination run wild in Wonderland, or click their heels with Dorothy in the land of Oz as they celebrate World Book Day this Thursday 5th March 2020 by dressing up as one of their favourite fictional characters.
How do we celebrate World Book Day?
World Book Day is celebrated each year by thousands of school children who come to school dressed up as characters from their favourite books. Costumes range from Peter Rabbit to The Three Musketeers – the possibilities are infinite! Many schools also plan special events, including book-themed activities in classes and visits to the library.
Each year the World Book Day charity encourages children to engage with books by distributing over 15 million book tokens among school aged children. These can be used to purchase one book from a special selection of World Book Day children’s books.
